These are the world's top hubs for millennials

When it comes to the world’s top cities for millennials, three Canadian cities land in the top 10 – the most number of entries for any country ranked among the best of the best.

Montréal, Toronto, and Vancouver are among 110 world cities overall that are attracting young workers, according to the 2018 rankings of search engine service Nestpick.

The entries were scored on four main priorities for millennials:

  • Business ecosystem (startup, employment and other economic opportunities)
  • Essentials (affordable housing, accessible food, high-speed internet, etc.)
  • Openness (immigration tolerance, cultural vibe, etc.)
  • Recreation

While Berlin, Germany topped the list with a final score of 7.14 out of 10, Montréal came in a close second with a score of 7.10. The city also garnered a score of 7.9 in terms of recreation.

Toronto and Vancouver ranked fifth and sixth overall with scores of 6.60 and 6.34, respectively.

All three Canadian cities scored exceptionally high on openness, with Toronto and Vancouver both garnering 9.0 out of 10 points.

Vancouver also scored 7.1 on its business ecosystem.

“How this generation differs from their predecessors is that they have more choice, and with these increased options has come a sense that they won’t settle for second-best,” said Ömer Kücükdere, managing director of Nestpick, a search engine for furnished apartments.

“This offers an exciting opportunity for cities to rise to the challenge and become a magnet for millennials, because while this young demographic is demanding more, they are also giving back more in terms of entrepreneurship, economy, and equality than ever before,” Kücükdere said.
