Ontario first province to pass landmark transparency bill

Ontario has become the first province to pass legislation which will increase transparency in the hiring process and aid diverse candidates.

Beginning on January 1, 2019, the Pay Transparency Legislation will require all publicly advertised job postings to include a salary rate or range.

It will also prevent employers from asking a job candidate about their past compensation and establish a framework to require larger employers to track and report wages based on diversity characteristics.

"This new legislation is part of our overall commitment to fairness in Ontario’s workplaces and will help ensure that women and other groups are treated equitably,” added Kevin Flynn, Minister of Labour.

“The Pay Transparency Act, 2018 will aid us in narrowing the gender wage gap.”

According to reports, the measures will begin with the Ontario Public Service, and then following consultation be rolled out to employers with over 250 employees in 2020.

“Pay transparency legislation will not only highlight pay inequities, it will help shift attitudes and biases that prevent women from achieving equal pay for equal work,” explained Harinder Malhi, Minister of the Status of Women.
