    I believe it often goes in the other direction, ie alcoholism first, working long hours second. Alcoholics have addictive personalities and tend to 'over do' whatever they do. Their feelings of low self esteem drive them to try to prove themselves by working very long hours, and yet still always feeling like they are going to be terminated, demoted, disciplined, etc...................therefore completing the cycle as they turn to alcohol to calm those fears. Do drink/work/drink/work/drink/work....
