Leadership and management are two very different capabilities, says author and leadership expert Mark Oliver

I cannot agree with the statement that "leadership and management are two very different capabilities which are independent of each other". Surely leadership is a function of management, at least according to most theories and the commentary of managers. Obviously strong leaders may lack other managerial competencies, and they may be better placed in organizations as owners, specialists, activists and change agents. I am not familiar with the quoted UHM model but am also concerned by how it has been summarized, for example showing managers' approach as thought leadership based on power, or manipulation based on pleasure, or compulsion based on survival. This demonstrates a shallow understanding on "management".
