Paid just $1.25 an hour for 10 years – What was HR thinking?

The damages awarded in this case are totally appropriate. What I find disheartening is that it stems from an employement situation in 1999 and is just getting resolved in 2014. What must it have been like for Ms. Garrie and her family to have this legal proceeding hanging over their heads for over 12 years? Does that wait-time for justice meet "the minimum any self-respecting human being should receive"?

Any time a person is paid less than minimum wage, HR should question the ethics of the situation. The practice of unpaid work placements is another example of this.
