Top 4 reasons employees are changing jobs

Two in five workers (40%) consider salary as the single biggest factor in their decision to pursue new employment opportunities, a new study showed.

This is true across all generations of workers, young and old alike, according to research from HR software company Ceridian.

But while pay is crucial to any compensation package, work benefits that contribute to a better quality of life in the long run are also important to employees, the report found.

Ceridian asked respondents multiple factors they considered when evaluating new opportunities:

  • 68% cited job location
  • 66%  – work-life balance
  • 66%  – salary
  • 57% – growth opportunities

“The truth is, every individual is at a different stage of their life and career. For some, work-life takes precedence and for others, home life is the priority,” said Lisa Sterling, chief people and culture officer at Ceridian.

“Our data shows organisations that want to attract world-class talent have an opportunity to better understand today’s worker preferences and tailor the recruiting and workplace experience to meet a wider range of employee needs,” Sterling said.

Knowledge of what employees desire is vital to winning the ongoing talent war. “In a job seeker’s market, candidates have room to be more selective,” she said.

The study zeroed in on the experiences of 1,500 new hires as well as employees who have declined a job offer within the past year.
