Managing mature workers

Lynn Roger from BMO Financial Group and HR Consultant Timothy Holden discuss how to attract, engage and retain older workers.

Caitlin Nobes:
 How can you attract and retain older workers who have an increasingly important role in our work force?  I’m Caitlin Nobes, welcome to HRM TV.

There are more generations than ever in our workplace today and those over 55 have an important role, thanks to the aging work force and the skills shortage.  Some of Canada’s top companies are working hard to attract and retain older workers.

Lynn Roger:
 I think that the reason why we want to retain and even attract I would say the more mature worker is that, they bring a breadth of experience and I would say to a certain extent wisdom. 

Caitlin Nobes:  The experience and loyalty older employees bring to a role can be a big advantage and the older workers needs aren’t that different from their younger colleagues.  

Timothy Holden, Toronto Training and HR
Timothy Holden:
 Older people typically aren’t as money motivated.  Obviously some people have pension contributions set aside, but typically their children have moved out, they don’t have the sort of costs of bringing up the young family that younger people do, so they are perhaps more interested in quality of life.

Caitlin Nobes:  Offering flexible work hours and days off to care for children or elderly parents is good for all workers, not just your mature staff.

Lynn Roger:  I think that it’s the variety of the assistance that we have and our focus on really enabling an individual to be at work full time and to give their all, because they have the, and need the policies and the supports to help them live their life right and take care of their family.  So I think that’s really important.
