The three traits of great HR leaders
What makes good leader great? It’s a question that HR has had to grapple with for years.

Is greatness born or made? What strategic functions can you implement in order to fully facilitate a manager’s growth into an executive? Whilst these questions are viable ones all boardrooms will be well-versed in, in order for an employee to fulfil their potential, organizations need a successful HR leader on board.

Speaking to Sara Charvet, senior HR business partner at First West Credit Union, she told us what she thinks makes a stand-out HR professional. “Courage, curiosity and empathy,” she explained.

“HR leaders need the courage to lead through change and challenge the status quo, especially when this is uncomfortable. Curiosity to try things that are out of the ordinary, embracing perspectives different to our own as well as having the agility to step outside of our comfort zones.

“Desire and ability to develop others as leaders; taking personal accountability for our actions and those of our teams and possessing empathy, which is perhaps the most crucial of them all.”

According to a study from Deloitte, 89% of HR leaders believe leadership to be one of the most important talent trends, with respondents adding they need to “strengthen, reengineer, and improve organizational leadership as an important priority”.

Charvet also revealed to us what she believes is the most exciting development in the field at present. “We’re on the verge of a massive shift from a lot of structure and boundaries to much more fluidity in how we work,” she said.

“With accelerating digitization and the growing ‘gig economy’, teams will need to develop different skills and mindsets to continue to create and innovate. Career opportunities will look different as some roles disappear, unimagined or re-imagined roles start to appear, and more agile roles are required. We’ll need to throw out traditional job descriptions.”

For a chance to hear more of Charvet’s thoughts on innovation and diversity, she will be speaking at HRD Canada’s Diversity & inclusion Masterclass, March 8th 2018. For more information on our speaker line up and agenda, click here.
